The weekly roundups corral the news you can use.
Facebook Video Search is Here
When Facebook first decided to compete against YouTube for original content and video views I saw one big difference between the two platforms. YouTube was/is the second largest search engine. A video posted on YouTube has the long-tail advantage of being found via search for days, weeks, months, and years after it has been posted. Facebook video was seen only in newsfeeds. Here today, gone tomorrow – unless it got shared and “went viral.” But even then the views were dependent on the video showing up in your newsfeed.
Well, this week Facebook added video search to their platform. To ensure that your videos are found through search you will need to properly tag your videos in relevant and popular categories.
Driving audience to videos, especially Live videos is critical for Facebook because The Information reports that it’s experiencing a decline in original, personal sharing. Apparently “original content broadcasting” was down 21% year over year as of mid-2015. Video and Live seem to have helped, but as of this year, original broadcast sharing was down 15% year over year.
Facebook Improves Live Video Discovery
Facebook is also investing in ensuring that they become the leaders in Live Video Stream. This year the feature was made available to all members after their initial launch with celebrities and media. Now Live Streaming is available for Facebook groups and events.
Today we’re rolling out the ability to go live in Facebook Groups and Facebook Events. Live in Groups allows you to broadcast to just the people in the Facebook Group – so you can go live in your family group, or share a workout plan in a fitness group. Live in Events means you can go live from a birthday party to allow those that can’t make it, to join the fun, and a performer can go live backstage to the people who’ve RSVP-ed to the event to give them a sneak peak. You can even use Events to schedule a live Q&A session. We hope this new ability to both broadcast and watch live video within Groups and Events enables people to connect more deeply with their closest friends, family and the communities of people who share their interests.
Facebook Messenger Makes Connecting Easier
You can now message a company or individual on Facebook Messenger directly with their username. For example, want to send us a message. Go to m.me/senseiproject
Facebook also launched Messenger Codes, circular patterns around a user’s profile photo, which can be scanned to start a chat with that person. According to their blog:
“Businesses can use Messenger Links and Messenger Codes in ads, on their website or in any other marketing channel to prompt people to reach out to them directly.”
If you are wondering if enough people are using Facebook messenger, Facebook revealed that over 900 million people are now using it.
Reddit FINALLY Has an Official Mobile App
There are many apps available to access Reddit, but Reddit never had their own official mobile app. Now they do.
