Influencer Insights with Christa Thompson

Social Media Influencers live busy lives. Take Christa Thompson. Just reading through the list of all the hats she wears is enough to make me exhausted.

Single mom, Editor in Chief, The Fairytale Traveler travel & lifestyle blog. Social media influencer and blog coach.

Me: What inspired you to start participating in social media?

Christa: Social media was part of the job of running a travel and lifestyle blog brand. It didn’t take long for me to realize it was a lot easier to post on social than write a blog post, so I spent time growing platforms. Now I find a good balance. But before all of this, I was a perpetual project launcher. I learned about blogging and social media as a career after the tragic murder of a close relative. Something just snapped from there. I knew every day from that point had to be spent doing something I loved. So, I figured out a way to make a brand out of being a wanderlusting, nerdy, pop culture, single mom.

Me: What is the best opportunity that you have received since you started participating in social media?

Christa: Oh there’s been so, so many. I can’t even name just one. I’ve checked off so many things from my bucket list in travel from exploring Viking heritage in Norway to sleeping in haunted castles. I’ve walked Hollywood red carpets, interviewed A-list celebrities and have been able to share much of it with my little boy. The best opportunity of all though is being able to provide for my son without showing up to someone else’s office. I’m here for him. Not too many single moms can say they never had to put their child in a day care center, or that they’ve taken their kid to see Santa, in the Arctic Circle. I’m very grateful.

Me: What is the biggest challenge of having a voice on social media and how do you handle it?

Christa: I don’t face too many walls, but one that always leaves me guessing is controversial topics. Since I can’t afford the PR team to manage a crisis, I have to steer clear of things that brush controversy whether it’s Sea World, a Circus or even doing something like target practice. I’m always fearful of trolls in my social comments.

Me: Any suggestions about what tech or social trends we need to be watching?

ChristaWish.com is the next big thing. It’s going to beat Walmart even in some areas. Global online retail is something to watch as a whole and keep a sharp edge on. We are already seeing it in social like crazy, but it’s about to get even crazier. I for one don’t enjoy having to shop out and about. So this is something I’m looking forward to. Paleo food delivered to my door, yes, please. Any apps for this I’ll be downloading asap.

We are already seeing wearable devices. I’ll be watching for the device that projects my email to the wall at my breakfast table so I can get a jump on my day. News, updates, and weather with my morning protein shake. Another yes, please.

Me: What advice would you give to people who want to do what you do?

Christa: Don’t blink. You really have to be on your game in this business. The biggest mistake you can make is boxing yourself into your own little bubble. You have to be out there reading other people’s content, pinning things, tweeting sharing and getting inspired by other great influencers. They will help you grow. I keep a list of my favorites.
