A personality that can shine through the noise, an opinion about life and all the experiences that it offers and a fun sense of humor is what keep people tuned in and following Krystyn. In this week’s Influencer Insights she shares how she got started and what will keep her going.
me: Give us a little insight into who you are.
Krystyn: I’m a sarcasm-loving, straight-shooting, jeans and t-shirts wearing, thirty-something wife to my high school sweetheart and mom of four girls. Yes. All girls. And three of them have red hair! And the youngest was accidentally born at home! The girls are 9 and 7 years old (a day shy of two years apart), 3 and 2. Some might say I’m a little crazy. To be honest, most say I’m a little crazy.
I am a chemist by trade with both a BS and MS in chemistry. I taught high school chemistry for 6 years and then decided to make mom-ing, writing and designing (krizzydesigns.com) my full-time gig.
I grew up in Texas, but have made Atlanta my home for over 10 years.
me: That is a …wow! How do you find time to write and network on social media?
Krystyn: I started blogging over 10 years ago before social media was a thing (at least in my knowledge). I hard-coded links on my blogger blog! I started blogging while I was in graduate school as I needed a creative outlet that was different than being in the lab. My blog evolved as my family and life did and now includes family life, travels in Atlanta and beyond and life’s journeys and adventures.
me: What is the best opportunity that you have received since you started participating in social media?
Krystyn: The single best is hard to decide. Over three years ago I was invited to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. Taking my family to Disney World wasn’t something I imagined ever possible, but with the help of the conference covering a large portion of the fees, we were able to make it happen and to have a great time. It was also amazing going to the SITSumATL- the inaugural Social Influencers Travel Summit to discover some of the awesome things in my home city. One that I’m looking forward to is a Cruise with Carnival with our entire family. That wouldn’t have happened without social media and blogging.
me: What is the biggest challenge of having a voice on social media and how do you handle it?
Krystyn: There are times that I worry that people won’t take me seriously or that I’m being inauthentic. I do my best to stay true to myself and my voice and I know that long time and loyal readers know this. Sometimes, it’s hard when you are limited to being seen by 140-characters (which is changing) and a facebook post for people to really remember that there is a voice and person behind the computer screen.
me: Any suggestions about what tech or social trends we need to be watching?
Krystyn: I think video is definitely one to watch out for and be present. With youtube still being the front-runner, periscope/meerkat, and blab are definitely coming out on the gates. I don’t know how they will impact brands long-term because of their initial use being limited to 24 hours or live, but with recordings possible, I see it as more of an option.
me: What keeps you going?
I like to think that my story is ever evolving and changing. Now that my youngest is 2, I look forward to even more adventures with the family even further from home and can’t wait to see what 2016 brings!
